Pool Closing Inquiry

Closing FAQs

In most cases, your water level should be left at normal operating level for the closing. There are a few circumstances in which the water level will need to be lowered, such as a gunite, concrete or stainless-steel wall pool WITH TILE. There are a few other unique situations that may require the water level to be a specific level for the closing. Please contact us if you have questions about this.

  • Monitor your pool water level – The water level can drop when the pool is closed due to several factors including: a leak that went unnoticed during the swimming season, water displacement, or shifting of an auto shut off pump. In addition, water overflowing out off your pool can also cause issues. Both situations can cause damage to the pool surface and structure.
  • Keep water off of your cover – If you have a solid cover, it is important to keep the water pumped off of the cover. This prevents damage to the cover and in the case of an auto cover, the track as well.
  • Add chemicals even when the pool is closed – Making sure the pool is balanced at the time of closing is very important. Adding chemicals during the off season can also help with a cleaner pool opening and help protect the pool surface. Our service department can be contacted about setting up winter service visits or our store associates can recommend products and provide instructions on how to add them.

We winterize pools using a high powered blower to blow out the pool lines and equipment. This method removes the water from the lines and equipment to protect against freeze damage. Because we use this method, we MUST have the water level above the return jets. This allows us to determine that we have a good seal on the plugs.

Antifreeze is not used as part of our standard winterization process, but we do use it in certain circumstances, on a case-by-case basis.

Opening FAQs

It is safe to swim as soon as your pool is properly balanced and sanitized, which typically takes 1 to 3 weeks! After opening, we recommend waiting at least 24 hours to allow the water chemistry to stabilize. Our team will test and adjust the water to ensure it’s safe for swimming.

A green pool at opening is usually caused by algae growth while the water sits untreated over the winter. The best way to avoid opening a green pool is to open your pool early in the season before the water warms up, schedule winter service visits to keep water chemistry balanced (a service that we offer!), and consider upgrading to a quality safety cover that blocks sunlight and debris. With the right closing steps and a little off-season care, your pool should be better off to start the season!
